'Media Assessment 2 learner response'
1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).
Mark 24 /43
Grade C
Feedback: Good range of theories referenced but Gerbner was overlooked and no real sense of a debate or argument needs to be more developed
2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
- Q1 the image has Stormzy bare-chested which arguably reinforces the sexualization's of black males in the media and reinforces traditional masculine stereotypes which contrasts with the idea of vulnerability. The lighting is low-key and sees a focus on both the left side of his face and chest, emphasizing these contrasting meanings of masculinity and vulnerability.
- Q2 - Synergy - Synergy allows companies to maximize profit from a brand (e.g. Harry Potter) by branching out into other platforms, merchandise or products.
- Q3 - BBC and Channel 4 shouldn’t produce popular programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing as this is unfair on commercial broadcasters struggling to survive in the digital age. Instead PSB channels should focus on programming that isn’t profitable so therefore not produced by commercial rivals.
- Q4-Cultivation theory (Gerbner) suggests that watching TV will, over a period of time, influence the audience’s ideas and perceptions of everyday life. This could be argued to be damaging to audiences if content is inappropriate or violent. However, UK television is regulated by Ofcom to protect audiences (particularly young people) from inappropriate content.
3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.

Yes
5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?
Yes I wrote about both but I needed to into more detail about the industry and the impact on competition.
6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.
I agree with the view that media has damaging effect on audiences. As people throughout history people have blamed various violent actions on the media such as when violent game like GTA 5 being blamed for the violent actions that people of the younger generation are being blamed for t. This also link to the Gerbner cultivation theory Cultivation theory (Gerbner) suggests that watching TV will, over a period of time, influence the audience’s ideas and perceptions of everyday life. This could be argued to be damaging to audiences if content is inappropriate or violent. However, UK television is regulated by Ofcom to protect audiences (particularly young people) from inappropriate content Gerbner’s cultivation theory suggested that heavy TV viewers developed ‘mean world syndrome’ and saw society as far more dangerous than it actually is. This could be considered a significant damaging effect. It could be argued the internet exacerbates this. Gerbner and Gross later developed this theory to suggest that heavy TV viewing made viewers fearful and homogenous (everyone believing the same thing). This is potentially very damaging to society. Consider recent political events and social media echo chambers. theory of many pea of the hypodermic needle model such Which suggest the theory that people have forgotten how will also have been injected with the information of the media. This also links to the theory that people are dependent of the media and that this also links to the idea that their media has damaging effects as people are being forced to rely on the media. Another theory that link to this the moral panic Theory as media perspective on things can leads to the public panicking about many different scenarios as they such as when the harry poster and how is promoting Witchcraft. This also suggest that media can negatively effect people and that people the media can amplify a scenario for the worse."
