Conclave Film review

Conclave surprised me in the best way. I didn’t expect a movie about a bunch of cardinals locked in the Vatican choosing a new Pope to feel tense, emotional, and honestly kind of epic  but it really does. The story follows Cardinal Lawrence, who’s put in charge of the whole election, and you can practically feel the pressure on him. He’s trying to do the right thing even while everyone around him has their own agenda, and that makes him easy to root for.

Ralph Fiennes is incredible —not in a flashy, dramatic way, but in a quiet “wow, he’s carrying centuries of history on his shoulders” kind of way. The supporting cast adds so much personality, especially in the small moments where they exchange these loaded glances across the voting hall. It’s like political drama mixed with a tiny bit of mystery, but done with way more elegance than most films aimed at younger audiences. I also thought it did a great job of explaining the hierarchy of Catholicism
